Shimon Schocken is a university professor who decided to do some community service by volunteering to take a group of juvenile inmates on a bike ride once a week. The initial purpose was to give the inmates a chance to experience a little bit of freedom and a chance to commune with nature.
The result turned out to be so much more. Shimon describes the challenges of dealing with troubled youth and how being part of a riding group teaches them about being part of a team, a community where they have to work together. It also teaches them about love- love of country, love of nature, love of each other and most importantly, love of self. Cycling became the platform for learning about life.
Biking is great for kids. It fosters a healthier lifestyle, encourages independence, allowing them to explore their surroundings and not be driven everywhere.
