Creating a Bicycle Culture by Design
Mikael Colville-Andersen, an urban mobility expert and CEO of Copenhagenize Consulting is known as Denmark’s Bicyclee Ambassador. In this talk, Mikael advocates for city planners to observe then design.
Observation is needed to understand how and why people do the things they do- in this case, how they use bicycle paths, where there may be an opportunity to create a more efficient path. Mikael talks about “designing” rather than “engineering” the city because designers are concerned with the end user’s experience.
Colville-Andersen boldly predicts that if cities create user friendly bike space, people will ride their bikes irrespective of terrain, temperature or any other perceived impediment. If biking becomes the most efficient form of transportation, people will start to do it. In other words, if you build it (correctly), they will come!
