Bicycle's help air quality - avoids adding toxins like ozone precursors, incompletely combusted hydrocarbons and particulate matter which are major health hazards.
Biking is easy right? But, have you ever thought about why a bike doesn’t tip over when we ride it? How it can stay balanced on two rather thin tires with one (and sometimes more) person on top of it? In this TED Talk, Arend Schwab discusses the mechanics of bicycle construction and most importantly, what needs to be done to make bicycling safe for the aging population.
Arend holds a BSc in Engineering at Dordrecht (1979), and an MSc (1983) and PhD (2002) at Delft. He runs the bicycle mechanics lab and teaches mechanics at Delft.
